I recently completed this 16×20 inch oil painting depicting the characters from my story of Mars in the distant future, “Seekers of Tomorrow.” Previously, I’d drawn Zoe, Ra, and Steve2 from every conceivable angle, but I hadn’t painted them. What I began to envision was closer to a pulp science fiction cover than it was anything else. Here, we see the characters in a chamber or vessel of some kind that has had part of its roof torn away, revealing the crimson Martian sky and its two moons, Phobos and Deimos. Within the chamber, Zoe, accompanied by Ra, finds the broken remains of her robot friend, Steve2. She lifts up his head, which still pulses with light and activity. A tear rolls down her cheek. Perhaps there’s still hope. Suddenly, she hears Ra screaming in the background, as the clawed, spidery legs of Dr. Caliente’s own robotic form reach out of the darkness for them. We catch Zoe here as she lifts her eyes, takes a short breath, and prepares to face a new, hideous kind of danger.
